How to create a Gmail account for your child
A Gmail address is the foundation of your child's digital identity — it's required for YouTube, Google Classroom, Android phones, and most other accounts they'll create later. Here's exactly how to set one up safely.
Setup steps
- 1Go to accounts.google.com and click 'Create account'
- 2Select 'For myself' or 'For my child' based on their age
- 3Enter your child's desired username (first.last format works well)
- 4Create a strong password and save it to your password manager
- 5Add a recovery phone number (your number) for account security
- 6Verify the phone number with the code sent
- 7Review and accept Google's terms of service
Parent pro tips
- Use firstname.lastname format for a professional email they can use forever
- Enable 2-factor authentication immediately after setup
- Consider adding your email as a backup recovery option
